Best Cheap Stocks To Watch For 2014

The global potash industry is in a state of upheaval. Several developments have taken place over the past couple of months that have caused potash prices to plummet, taking stock prices of the world's biggest potash producers down in tandem.

As a result, valuations of industry leaders Potash Corp. (NYSE: POT  ) , The Mosaic Company (NYSE: MOS  ) , and Intrepid Potash (NYSE: IPI  ) have compressed dramatically, leaving each stock looking very cheap on the surface.

Are these stocks as cheap as they seem? Or, conversely, should investors remain on the sidelines?

Disturbing developments in global potash
In a dramatic move that clearly surprised the market, Russia's Uralkali disrupted one of the world's largest potash partnerships by ending its joint venture with its partner in Belarus. Because of this, global potash prices are expected to decline by as much as 25%.

In the wake of the news, analysts were quick to slash price targets on these firms, citing the likely downward pressure on global potash prices.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Chandan Dubey]

I am increasingly finding myself at a loss to describe what I feel after reading the proxy of Freeport-McMoran Copper & Gold (FCX).

I started getting interested in the stock in October 2011 when the stock price dropped precipitously to $28.85. The immediate reason was Indonesian labor strike at Grasberg. There were violent fights between unionized and un-unionized workers and the mine had to be closed at the expense of loss in production. Coupled with a jittery market the stock dropped to a level not seen since Jul 2010.

Finally, UnitedHealth Group (NYSE: UNH  ) shares are up 1.9% today to rank among the Dow's top stocks. UnitedHealth is positioned well for Obamacare's launch next year as the largest public insurer in the country, but cracks have started to show in the firm's armor. UnitedHealth has already announced that it won't participate in the first year of California's state-run individual-insurance market, and further concerns have arisen regarding the company's handling of a $20 billion award from the Pentagon this April to manage the Department of Defense's health care services. The DoD has criticized the company for delays in medical payments and benefits, and if the Pentagon demands reimbursement for that failure, UnitedHealth shareholders could take a hit. It's not reassuring news as we head into the murky future of health care reform.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Travelers (NYSE: TRV  ) is scheduled to release its quarterly earnings report on Tuesday, and in the absence of some of the massive disasters that the company has had to endure in previous years, all signs point to positive results for the insurance giant. As Travelers earnings start climbing higher, though, investors want to know how long the good times can last.

  • [By John Divine]

Lastly, property and casualty insurer Travelers (NYSE: TRV  ) sank 3.8% to end at the bottom of the Dow. You'd never guess it after considering the shellacking the stock took today, but the company actually blew away Wall Street estimates, earning $2.41 per share when analysts were looking for just $1.64 per share. So why the shellacking? Well, it appears Travelers was somehow able to overcharge customers for an entire quarter, and, because people are starting to notice, the insurer has to quickly lower its prices before things get ugly.

  • [By Dan Carroll]

On the other side of the Dow today, Travelers (NYSE: TRV  ) ranks among the index's biggest losers, with shares down 1.3% so far. This stock has done well year to date, gaining more than 15%, but the run-up has come just as the Atlantic hurricane season is about to start. NOAA predicted back in May that seven to 11 hurricanes are likely to form in the Atlantic this year, with three to six developing into major storms of category three or higher intensities.
