One of our core biotech holdings surprised us by publishing positive results in the most recent online edition of The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), notes John McCamant, editor of The Medical Technology Stock Letter.
Novavax (NVAX) released its Phase I trial of 284 subjects injected with the H7N9 flu virus vaccine.
While the data was expected to be released before the end of the year, the fact that the NEJM published the Phase I study adds tremendous validation to the NVAX vaccine. We would note that the prestigious NEJM rarely publishes Phase I data.
The current Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) contract has directed the company to utilize the current portion of its pandemic flu contract on H7N9, underscoring the new virus' global pandemic potential.
NVAX cloned the genes and began human studies in a remarkable 91 days afterwardsesulting in a positive clinical outcome just 116 days after the announced lethal outbreak.

If that breakout triggers soon, then NNVC will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $6.50 to its 52-week high at $7.59 a share.
Traders can look to buy NNVC off weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below some key near-term support levels at $4.55 to $4.52 a share. One can also buy NNVC off strength once it starts to clear those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Ben Levisohn]
In what’s turned into a bad day for biotech stocks, Intercept Pharmaceuticals (ICPT) is among the worst performers.
REUTERSShares of Intercept Pharmaceuticals have dropped 8.3% to $295, lagging the 3.3% drop in the iShares Nasdaq Biotechnology ETF (IBB) and the 4.7% decline in the SPDR S&P Biotech ETF (XBI). Gilead Sciences (GILD) has fallen 2.1% to $72.44 and Amgen (AMGN) is off just 1.8% at $121.88.
Blame SAC’s decision to drastically cut its position and a secondary offering for Intercept’s decline.
Wedbush’s Liana Moussatos explains the purpose of the secondary offering:
Intercept raised approximately $183.3MM in a follow-on offering of 600,000 shares at $320/share. We project runway into Q3 2016 from Q3 2015, which covers major milestones, including regulatory review and potential approval of OCA in PBC in 2015…
Reiterate OUTPERFORM rating and acquisition value of $493. Our acquisition value is calculated by applying a 30% annual discount to our net peak WW revenues for each drug/indication and applying a 1-10x multiple depending on stage of development to reflect risk. Each combination is added in a sum-of-parts to calculate an acquisition value for [Intercept Pharmaceuticals] and projected to the end of 2015 to include the time frame we see for potential acquisition.
Just expect a heck of a lot of volatility before then.

Sure Intercept Pharmaceuticals (ICPT) might feel like the only biotech stock that matters today, but there are others. For instance, Incyte (INCY) and BioMarin (BMRN) are on the move after Barclays changed its ratings on the pair.
REUTERSBut before getting into that, let’s talk about Barclays’ Ying Huang and team’s thoughts on the sector. Would you believe they echo those of Goldman Sachs in its downgrade of the sector earlier this week (and just about everyone else) by calling this a stock picker’s market?
Huang explains:
Biotech should continue to outperform in 2014, but may be a more stock-specific year: We believe biotech as a group will continue to outperform the broad market in 2014 but do not expect a repeat of 2013. In 2013, the Nasdaq Biotech Index outperformed the S&P 500 by a large margin (+65.6% vs. S&P +29.6%), driven by a combination of generalist investor interest, hunt for growth opportunities, healthy long-term outlook for the industry, and an accommodative FDA. While we expect trends to remain strong in the overall industry and for biotech to outperform the broader market in 2014, it will likely be more muted, with fewer meaningful catalysts and as investors favor larger companies with less downside risk.
Huang too falls back on the PEG ratio–Price/Earnings to Growth–while explaining away the sectors P/E of 31.4, which dwarfs the 18 P/E in U.S. pharmaceuticals. “Looking at PEG ratios, which we view as a more appropriate metric given the growth profile of biotech companies, the group has traded at a reasonable and stable 1.0x for the past decade,” Huang says.
As for Incyte and BioMarin, Huang explains why he’s bullish on the former, bearish on the latter:
After taking a closer look at [Incyte's] pipeline assets, we are increasingly bullish on its proprietary JAK1 inhibitor INCB39110 and its IDO inhibitor INCB024360 and have increased ou

Top 10 Medical Stocks To Buy Right Now: Biodel Inc (BIOD)
Biodel Inc. (Biodel), incorporated on December 3, 2003, is a development-stage speciality biopharmaceutical company focused on the development and commercialization of treatments for diabetes. The Company develops its product candidates by applying its formulation technologies to existing drugs. Its advanced program involves developing formulations of injectable recombinant human insulin (RHI). In addition to its ultra-rapid-acting insulin formulations, the Company has developed prototype formulations of a liquid glucagon, a basal insulin and a glucose responsive insulin, in each case for use by patients with diabetes. RHI-based formulation known as Linjeta was the subject of a New Drug Application (NDA).
The Company has two pivotal Phase III clinical trials with its preferred commercial formulation of Linjeta prior to re-submitting the NDA. In August 2011, it completed patient visits and analyzed top-line data from the first Phase 1 clinical trial of two RHI-based formulations. The trial was a single-center, randomized, double-blind, three-period crossover trial in 18 subjects with Type 1 diabetes. The purpose of the trial was to evaluate the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic characteristics and injection site toleration of BIOD-105 and BIOD-107, as compared to the insulin analog marketed as Humalog. The Company conducted Phase I, Phase II and Phase III clinical trials comparing the performance of its Linjeta formulation of RHI to either Humulin, which is a branded formulation of RHI or Humalog. Its pivotal Phase III clinical trials were open-label, parallel group, randomized trials conducted at centers in the United States, Germany and India.
The Company competes with Eli Lilly, Novo Nordisk, Sanofi-Aventis, Halozyme Therapeutics, Inc. and MannKind Corporation.

One under-$10 specialty biopharmaceutical player that's starting to trend within range of triggering a big breakout trade is Biodel (BIOD), which is focused on the development and commercialization of innovative treatments for diabetes. This stock has been hit hard by the bears over the last three months, with shares down by 24%.
If you take a look at the chart for Biodel, you'll notice that this stock is ripping higher here right off its 50-day moving average of $2.32 a share with strong upside volume. Volume on Thursday has so far registered over 750,000 shares, which is well above its three-month average action of 445,084 shares. This move is quickly pushing shares of BIOD within range of triggering a big breakout trade.
Traders should now look for long-biased trades in BIOD if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $2.52 to $2.60 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 445,084 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then BIOD will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels $3 to its 200-day moving average of $3.39 a share. Any high-volume move above $3.39 will then give BIOD a chance to tag $4 a share.
Traders can look to buy BIOD off weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below some key near-term support at $2.10 a share. One can also buy BIOD off strength once it starts to clear those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.
