Canada feels like it is getting picked on by Europe. This week, Canada's natural resources minister issued a warning to EU countries regarding their discriminatory treatment of Canadian oil sands. While Europe labeling oil sands as a "greenhouse gas intense oil source" might not hurt Canada's bottom line right now, the country is trying more to squash the bad rap Canadian oil sands have had lately. That very same label is one of the biggest reason people are blocking TransCanada's (NYSE: TRP ) Keystone XL pipeline.
Canada does have some reason to fight back because Europe is already importing other heavy crudes that Canada claims is just as greenhouse gas intense as oil sands. In this video, Fool.com contributor Tyler Crowe looks at the validity of Canada's claim and asks what oil sands can do to get things headed in the right direction.

This series, brought to you by Yahoo! Finance, looks at which upgrades and downgrades make sense, and which ones investors should act on. Today, our headlines feature an upgrade for Thomson Reuters Reuters (NYSE: TRI ) , a new buy rating for Novavax (NASDAQ: NVAX ) -- but for Union Pacific (NYSE: UNP ) , a downgrade. Let's get that bad news out of the way first.

Ron Brown, head of Elektron Analytics, a Thomson Reuters (NYSE: TRI ) unit that sells news feeds that computers can read, said that the words "explosions" or "Obama" alone wouldn't have triggered selling. But add "White House," and it's a combination even the slowest computer couldn't miss.

It's been a solid year for Thompson Reuters (TRI); since the calendar flipped over to January, this $30 billion financial media firm has rallied more than 22%. But don't worry if you've missed out on the move -- TRI looks well-positioned for higher levels thanks to the pattern that's been setting up in shares.
Thompson Reuters is currently forming an ascending triangle pattern, a bullish setup that's formed by horizontal resistance above shares at the $35.50 level and uptrending support to the downside. Basically, as TRI bounces in between those two technically-important price levels, it's getting squeezed closer and closer to a confirmed breakout above that $35.50 price level. When the breakout happens, it's time to be a buyer.
TRI closed above the $35.50 level in yesterday's session, but it's a little early to call it a breakout just yet. If shares can hold above that breakout level all through today's session, then the buy signal is worth heeding.

Insurance companies have created an entire industry based upon risk, and except for AIG (NYSE: AIG ) during the financial crisis, it has worked out pretty well. So, it's not a stretch to imagine a large life insurer like Canada's Sun Life Financial (NYSE: SLF ) assuming the pension liability for the Canadian Wheat Board's defined benefit plan in a recent $147 million deal, the first such accord in Canada's history.

Valuation
Over the next five years growth in the Asian market will likely boost the overall modest premium growth rate, averaging it at 2%, while the total revenue CAGR recovers to 3% after the steep declines reported since 2012. Furthermore, Manulife ROE will continue its current upward trend, increasing from 2013 10.9% to an average 12% by 2018, accompanied by the steadily expanding net margins of 16.8%. While it will take some time for the company growth to accelerate, I feel bullish about management optimism regarding its business shift, and see the dividend yield and returns on equity as solid benefits for a long term investment. Moreover, the firm is currently trading at a 10% price discount relative to the industry average of 14.0x, making it a relatively inexpensive buy.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Steve Symington]
Of course, McDonald's isn't alone in struggling to offset increased food costs; margins at fast-casual competitorChipotle Mexican Grill (NYSE: CMG ) , for instance, were hit hard last year after the company remained reluctant to raise prices to offset higher food costs.
- [By Rich Duprey]
Although Chipotle Mexican Grill (NYSE: CMG ) and Panera Bread (NASDAQ: PNRA ) have become shorthand for fast casual dining, and are seen as the reason fast food restaurants are fast losing sales, there may be a different culprit at work -- one that, until now, has been surreptitiously siphoning off sales.

Now don’t get me wrong. Some stocks certainly look a bit frothy. The Container Store (TCS) went public on Friday and promptly doubled. And as Michael Santoli noted with tongue planted firmly in cheek on Wednesday, more than a few stocks could use a “talking down” from their founder CEOs the wayElon Musk did with Tesla (TSLA) last week. They included LinkedIn (LNKD), Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG) and Starbucks (SBUX).
- [By shash63]
For those who like to opt in food and beverages segment stocks, can always look at Chipotle (CMG) and Cheesecake (CAKE). Both these companies are recording growth. These two are established players as well.
