10 Best Solar Stocks To Invest In Right Now

(Editor's note: In this guest essay, Deloitte consultants Eric Openshaw and Irfan Saif assemble the best available estimates for the economic clout of the cybercrime industry.)

No one knows the true cost of cybercrime. Annual loss estimates for U.S. corporations range from $70-140 billion in a recent report from the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) to $400 billion quoted by U.S. House of Representatives Intelligence Committee leaders who introduced the Rogers-Ruppersberger Cybersecurity Bill.

The CSIS report put global costs at up to $500 billion, while U.S. NSA Director General Keith Alexander calls cyber theftof intellectual property "the greatest transfer of wealth in human history."

Numbers like these, and news stories about airline reservation system outages or industry-specific hacking to steal solar panel designs >, blur the line between risk and theft. They also put directors and senior executives on notice-doing business in a digital world carries new and very different types of risks.

First Solar (NASDAQ: FSLR  ) asked for another infusion of cash this week, and with one of the best balance sheets in solar, it's reasonable to wonder why the company needs more money from investors. It ended last quarter with $1.3 billion in cash, restricted cash, and securities, and just $562.2 millionin long-term debt, better than every other publicly traded company in solar.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Jonathan Yates]

Investors have certainly been "fearful" of the coal sector. The exchange traded fund for coal, Market Vectors Coal (NYSE: KOL), is off nearly 20 percent for the year. Stocks such as Arch Coal (NYSE: ACI) and Alpha Natural Resources (NYSE: ANR) are also down sharply for 2013. But Peabody Energy (NYSE: BTU) just surprised Wall Street in beating forecasts for the most recent quarter: as a result, its share price is up more than 7 percent for the week.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

For investors who bought shares of Peabody Energy (BTU) at the beginning of the year, its shares have been like a lump of coal in Christmas stocking. But Goldman Sachs sees a much happier outcome in the future.

Goldman Sachs’ positive view on some coal stocks comes as Credit Suisse reassesses refiners.

    Bloomberg News

Goldman analyst Neil Mehta and Vinit Joshi explain why they raised their rating on shares of Peabody Energy:

We upgrade shares of Peabody Energy (BTU) to Buy from Neutral with 31% total return (including dividends) to our 6-month target price of $26. Four factors underpin our positive view of BTU: (1) the potential for continued cost cutting and volume growth in Australia, (2) the bottoming in met coal prices, (3) improving cash flow and (4) attractive relative and absolute valuation. Even after outperformance in the last three months, BTU has still lagged the S&P500 by over 50% in the last 12 months and 110% in the last 3 years.

Mehta and Joshi also took a look at what they see as the big themes in the coal sector: Cost cutting, restructuring and balance sheets. They make some recommendations:

Own cost-cutting winners, including Buy-rated BTU. Other companies with strong
cost control potential include Neutral-rated [Walter Energy (WLT) and Alpha Natural Resources (ANR).]

Buy restructuring stories, including Buy-rated [SunCoke Energy (SXC)]. We see high potential that SXC drops down coke-making assets from the parent to its MLP in 1Q2014, as suggested by management commentary.

Avoid companies with weaker balance sheets, including Sell-rated [Arch Coal (ACI)].

Peabody has gained 3.7% to $20.81, Walter has risen 7% to $18.57, Alpha Natural has advanced 4.3% to $7.99, SunCoke is up 3.3% at $21.24, and even Arch Coal is surging: It’s gained 6.4% to $4.48.

While coal-to-gas switching -- the practice in which power plants use natural gas to create electricity rather than coal -- is expected to continue in the aggregate over the next several decades, you shouldn't count coal out of the fight anytime soon. In fact, many coal stocks including Arch Coal (NYSE: ACI  ) , Peabody Energy (NYSE: BTU  ) , and Alpha Natural Resources (NYSE: ANR  ) look poised for a significant recovery on a near-term reversal in the coal-to-gas transition. Ultimately, while natural gas has shown strength recently and the explosion in shale gas production has increased the importance of gas, the U.S. is not likely to move away from coal as a critical source of power.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Travis Hoium]

In China, Canadian Solar (NASDAQ: CSIQ  ) is doing a better job transitioning to Japan and project development than most, and it would be a much better pick than most. But still, there are risks, and this Fool's choice is to stick with high-quality U.S. companies for which you don't have to depend on government banks for survival.

  • [By Travis Hoium]

    Who wins?
It's important to remember that the only change from two months ago is that Chinese panels will have a higher price. So, companies such as LDK Solar (NYSE: LDK  ) , who were trying to compete on price alone, will likely be left in the dust. Investors should focus on higher-quality manufacturers like Yingli Green Energy, Trina Solar, and Canadian Solar (NASDAQ: CSIQ  ) as potential winners from the negotiated solar deal.

  • [By Justin Loiseau]

Canadian Solar (NASDAQ: CSIQ  ) announced today that it has won a contract to supply Asia-based Soleq Solar with modules totaling 91 MW for solar power for projects in Thailand.

  • [By Travis Hoium]

JinkoSolar (NYSE: JKS  ) and Canadian Solar (NASDAQ: CSIQ  ) have slightly better balance sheets and they're focusing on expanding into systems, which will smooth out demand. JinkoSolar has a $1 billion financing deal with the China Development Bank to build projects, not just manufacturing capacity, which will help demand. Canadian Solar has built a huge systems business in Canada, including a $310 million, 130 MW project last month, and signed 18 MW of deals in South Carolina last week. The systems business generates stable demand and allows companies to compete more than on price alone, which helps margins.

Advisors' Opinion:

Solar stocks have not exactly given buy and hold investors a smooth ride, but small capGT Advanced Technologies Inc (NASDAQ: GTAT) could be an interesting materials play on the solar sectormeaning its worth taking a closer look at the stock along with potential peers like Ascent Solar Technologies, Inc (NASDAQ: ASTI) and STR Holdings, Inc (NYSE: STRI) plus solar ETF Guggenheim Solar ETF (NYSEARCA: TAN). I should mention that just last week, we added GT Advanced Technologies to ourSmallCap Network Elite Opportunity (SCN EO) portfolio for bothfundamentals and technical reasons and we are already up almost 9%.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Dan Caplinger]

The state of the Chinese solar industry has grown increasingly dire recently, as Suntech Power defaulted on its bonds rather than receive an anticipated bailout from the Chinese government. LDK Solar (NYSE: LDK  ) has also faced big problems, having "partially defaulted" on bonds last month and negotiating a settlement with many of the bondholders. Yet although ReneSola has similar debt challenges, it was able to secure a $51 million loan from the China Development Bank, giving it more breathing room to try to work its way out of its financial troubles.

  • [By Paul Ausick]

Chinese solar companies are a different story. Many manufacture their own silicon wafers and sell silicon to other makers. Trina Solar Ltd. (NYSE: TSL), LDK Solar Co. Ltd. (NYSE: LDK), JA Solar Holdings Co. Ltd. (NASDAQ: JASO) and Canadian Solar Inc. (NASDAQ: CSIQ) all manufacture and sell solar ingots, wafers or cells.

  • [By Travis Hoium]

This is a big hit for the Chinese solar industry and some of the biggest players in solar. Earlier this month, The Wall Street Journal reported that Europe was poised to put a 48.6% tariff on Suntech Power's (NYSE: STP  ) panels, 55.9% on LDK Solar's (NYSE: LDK  ) , and 51.5% on Trina Solar's. Companies who cooperated with the investigation on dumping would be slapped with a 47.6% tariff and those who didn't would be taxed at 67.9%.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Travis Hoium]

    Source: Company earnings releases.

Solar companies have reported losses for some time now, but LDK Solar has more debt than most companies, and won't be able to survive with such feeble numbers. At the end of 2012, debt stood at $2.8 billion, and we know now that the company ran out of cash just this week. There's no way LDK Solar can survive on just $135.9 million in quarterly revenue and that kind of debt level. A problem across solar High debt loads and feeble margins aren't a challenge faced by LDK Solar alone. Suntech Power gave in to these pressures last month, defaulting on its own debt. Yingli Green Energy (NYSE: YGE  ) is now the most indebted Chinese solar company, with $2.5 billion in debt, and I wouldn't doubt if they're not far behind LDK and Suntech. The defaults of Suntech and LDK has to be concerning for all of Chinese solar, especially if banks don't keep the free flow of funds that have powered a rapid expansion in production. Balance sheets matter
What's becoming clearer and clearer every quarter is that balance sheets matter, not just for investors, but also for solar installers. Solar modules come with warranties, sometimes stretching as long as 25 years, and if a customer questions whether a company will be around in only a year or two, they may choose another option. Since Chinese modules vary very little from a performance perspective, the customer may choose a better-capitalized company like JinkoSolar instead of Yingli or LDK, or even move to a U.S. company like First Solar (NASDAQ: FSLR  ) or SunPower (NASDAQ: SPWR  ) . As financial conditions get worse at these companies more and more customers leave and the problems get worse, creating a downward spiral. LDK and Suntech are the poster children for this and are a major reason investors need to stick with quality in solar. I've been down on LDK Solar since I began predicting its failure in 2011. The effect on Chinese solar stocks
To put the price floor into perspective, Yingli Green Energy (NYSE: YGE  ) had an average selling price of $0.67 per watt in the first quarter. The price increase would amount to about 11% under the new plan.

  • [By Travis Hoium]

Don't look now but SunPower (NASDAQ: SPWR  ) has become the best-performing stock in the solar industry. Over the past year, it's been better than fellow U.S.-based companies First Solar (NASDAQ: FSLR  ) and SolarCity (NASDAQ: SCTY  ) , and far better than most Chinese manufacturers. Yingli Green Energy (NYSE: YGE  ) and Trina Solar lag well behind even after recent pops higher; only Canadian Solar (NASDAQ: CSIQ  ) can come close to SunPower's return (and I'll get into the reason for that below).
