Asian stock markets traded mostly lower on Tuesday as investors digested a slew of corporate earnings, while sentiment turned cautious ahead of Wednesday Federal Reserve policy decision.
Weak U.S. pending home sales data for September missed expectations, falling 5.6% to their lowest level since December. Coming just before the U.S. Federal Reserve holds its latest policy meeting, the poor data raised expectations that the central bank will keep its bond-buying program unchanged.
Although the S&P 500 (SPX) hit a new high overnight, Wall Street ended Monday little changed, providing a weak lead for Asia. Regional stocks trickled lower, coming down from gains made in the previous session.

We believe bothUnited Continental and JetBlue have fleet inefficiencies that contribute to poor margins for both airlines. IfUnited Continental acquired JetBlue 60 E-190s (and the 24 on order), in a transaction like the one Delta Air Lines (DAL) andSouthwest Airlines (LUV) announced in 2012 when Southwest Airlines agreed to sublease its 88 B717s to Delta Air Lines, we believe both companies would benefit. This would also represent no incremental capacity to United Continental, by our math…

The aviation industry is expected to perform well in the future. Analysts expect aviation stocks to move impressively in the stock market. Estimates put the size of the aviation industry at $3.5 billion by 2016. With these expectations, many operators will try to improve their operations to get hold of this handsome growth opportunity. Southwest Airlines (LUV) and Delta Air Lines (DAL) are two companies in this sector that deserve a close look.

UBS analysts Darryl Genovesi and Raymond Wong explain what Delta Air Lines’ (DAL) disappointing update yesterday means for American Airlines (AAL), United Continental (UAL) and other carriers:
ASSOCIATED PRESS[Delta's unit] revenue weakness attributed to weaker Latam yields as business travel declined during World Cup. We can see this trend in June agency bookings, followed by sharp recovery in July/Aug. American Airlines is most levered to Latam among our coverage.
Mapping agency bookings across American Airlines’ geographic mix would imply ~5.7% Q2 PRASM growth for it, followed by 4-5% growth in July and August. While our prior Q2 EPS estimate had incorporated some upside beyond this forecast, we are scaling back our expectation with our Q2 EPS estimate moving from $1.96 to $1.85.
Mapping agency bookings across United Continental’s geographic mix would imply ~5% Q2 PRASM growth for it, followed by ~4% growth in July and August, although our Q2 EPS estimate at $2.00 incorporates ~3% PRASM growth, high end of 1-3% guidance.
Shares of Delta Air Lines have gained 1.1% to $38.67 at 12:03 p.m., while United Continental has risen 1.9% to $40 and American Airlines has declined 0.5% to $41.74.

Bought out earlier this year from SUPERVALU (NYSE: SVU ) by private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management, Albertsons has decided to forgo compiling individual customer shopping habits through loyalty cards at all of its brands, including Acme, Jewel-Osco, Shaw's/Star Market, and its namesake stores. Shoppers might not be aware of the treasure trove of data contained in those plastic store cards you swipe at the beginning of your checkout procedure, but they're a marketer's dream.

What's more, Whole Foods management plans to increase the total number of domestic stores to 1,000, or nearly triple the 345 total locations it currently maintains. If that sounds aggressive, consider that grocery giant Safeway (NYSE: SWY ) currently has more than 1,600 locations, and the behemoth SUPERVALU (NYSE: SVU ) boasted more than 5,000 stores at the end of last year.Compared to both Safeway and SUPERVALU, at least, Whole Foods has plenty of room to grow -- and plenty of market share to grab along the way.

Pfizer (NYSE: PFE ) is also in the winners circle this morning, with a 3.1% gain. The pharmaceutical giant announced that it will be splitting off the remainder of Zoetis (NYSE: ZTS ) , its animal health business. The company is offering a share exchange to investors in order to reduce its 80.2% stake in the company. The tax-free transaction would allow shareholders to take over the remaining stake in Zoetis, making it fully independent. The company has risen 27% since its IPO in February. This is one of the final steps in slimming down Pfizer in order to refocus on developing new drugs.
- [By Maxx Chatsko]
Pfizer (NYSE: PFE ) recently announced plans to sell its remaining 80% stake in animal-health company Zoetis (NYSE: ZTS ) after about four months on the public market. Margins and profits aren't as high in the animal health business, which has pushed the world's largest pharmaceutical company to streamline its focus. It also highlights a delicate Catch-22 for Big Pharma.
- [By Dan Caplinger]
The other major move that Pfizer made during the quarter was to launch an initial public offering of 20% of its interest in its Zoetis (NYSE: ZTS ) animal-health division. Given the prospects for growth in animal health -- pet owners are willing to spend big to keep their pets healthy -- Zoetis will have a good shot at gaining its share of an expanding pie even in the face of strong competition, and Pfizer shareholders will continue to reap rewards of those gains because of Pfizer's 80% ownership of Zoetis.
- [By Selena Maranjian]
The biggest new holdings are pharmaceutical company Actavisand fertilizer specialist Mosaic. Other new holdings of interest include Zoetis (NYSE: ZTS ) . If you haven't heard of Zoetis, that may be because it was just spun off by Pfizerearlier this year. It's a major enterprise, though the world's largest animal-health company, and a new additionto the S&P 500. Its dividend is on the puny side at the moment, but with a low payout ratio, it has much room to grow.
