DELAFIELD, Wis. (Stockpickr) -- Professional traders running mutual funds and hedge funds don't just look at a stock's price moves; they also track big changes in volume activity. Often when above-average volume moves into an equity, it precedes a large spike in volatility.
>>5 Big Stocks to Trade for Big Gains
Major moves in volume can signal unusual activity, such as insider buying or selling -- or buying or selling by "superinvestors."
Unusual volume can also be a major signal that hedge funds and momentum traders are piling into a stock ahead of a catalyst. These types of traders like to get in well before a large spike, so it's always a smart move to monitor unusual volume. That said, remember to combine trend and price action with unusual volume. Put them all together to help you decipher the next big trend for any stock.
>>5 Stocks Poised to Pop on Bullish Earnings
With that in mind, let's take a look at several stocks rising on unusual volume today.

Margins matter. The more Seacor Holdings (NYSE: CKH ) keeps of each buck it earns in revenue, the more money it has to invest in growth, fund new strategic plans, or (gasp!) distribute to shareholders. Healthy margins often separate pretenders from the best stocks in the market. That's why we check up on margins at least once a quarter in this series. I'm looking for the absolute numbers, so I can compare them to current and potential competitors, and any trend that may tell me how strong Seacor Holdings's competitive position could be.

Investors who've made a point of keeping tabs on the 3D printing craze this year will know that a pair of small caps in this space - Camtek LTD (NASDAQ:CAMT) and Voxeljet AG (NYSE:VJET) - have dominated the headlines in just the past few weeks. For CAMT, the big news was the recent announcement that it would be the first 3D printer maker to develop a product that could print circuit boards. As for VJET, news that it was going to greatly expand its on-demand-printing capacity (for customers that need smaller occasional jobs but don't want to buy a printer of their own) lit the stock up quite nicely.

Rise of the carry-on-bag fee
In April 2010, ultra-low-cost carrier Spirit Airlines (NASDAQ: SAVE ) became the first airline in the U.S. (and possibly the world) to introduce a fee for carry-on baggage. Spirit's management decided that adding a carry-on baggage fee would allow them to reduce base airfares, stimulating demand, while improving efficiency by discouraging travelers from bringing large carry-on bags. Two years later, Spirit finally got some company as fellow ULCC Allegiant Travel (NASDAQ: ALGT ) instituted its own carry-on-bag charge. - [By Sean Williams]
I know what you're probably thinking: The words "love" and "airline" in the same sentence must either be a mistake or an intentional oxymoron. However, with regard to low-cost airline Spirit Airlines (NASDAQ: SAVE ) , it's the honest truth.
